Starting Young on Financial Literacy

Financial literacy is important for making smart decisions involving money. But increasingly, research shows that the earlier one starts learning the topic about financial literacy, the better.

A paper from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania found that even when it comes to something as simple as using websites and other technology to make financial decisions, people who start early are better equipped to use these tools.

In this dynamic age of social media and the rapidly expanding reach of the internet, our students are exposed at a very early age to the vagaries of making and spending money within the ephemeral context of the virtual world. Many grow up believing that the economics of online virtual world are parallel with those of the real world.

Our Young Savers programme aims to equip students as young as seven years old with the basic understanding of money, finance and the fundamentals of earning and spending. We believe that if we teach them at a very early age,  they are able to capitalise on these knowledge to arm themselves with the financial winning edge when they grow up.

 

Our Stories

IvP with Westgrove Primary

In 2012, we worked with West Grove Primary School to participate in the annual IvP (Innovation Programme) competition. Students were taught skills and strategies in generating ideas and evaluating solutions, conducting surveys to gather information on products, writing reports on their inventions and building prototypes. Through many sessions of fun, sweat and intense prototyping, students from the school managed to create two unique innovations:

Millionaire_bentoBento Box with Legs

This unique invention allowed individuals to eat comfortably with a bento box standing upright so that the person eating need not bend down too far to munch on his yummies. This invention has reduced discomfort and increased better digestion. The end result is less mess and more smiles.

An ergonomic table for students

Tables are oftentimes designed with adults and larger kids in mind. Very few designs take into account the ergonomic needs of children who are growing up. It is this group of users who are most at risk and have the most to benefit from due to their integral stage of growth. This product is designed with all the above-mentioned considerations in mind so that students can benefit from proper ergonomics and grow up with healthy posture habits.

BECOMING A MILLIONAIRE

Students will discover the fundamental traits of individuals who are financially savvy and independent. They will learn the characteristics of critical financial mindsets and behavioural changes to adopt. Students will also learn key financial and entrepreneurial concepts to prepare them for a journey of financial success.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this programme, students will be able to acquire the attitude, knowledge, skills and tools to become financially more savvy individuals.

ASEAN MONEY

Students will be exposed to the economic and cultural diversity of ASEAN which is composed of over six hundred million unique individuals. They will also be introduced to the various financial systems and the comparative advantages that each ASEAN nation possesses.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this programme, students will have an in-depth understanding of the various cultures and economic opportunities that ASEAN has and how economic imbalances between the member nations can be overcome by a single-minded purpose to improve the lives of others through charity, entrepreneurship and social change.

Students will learn all the tools and concepts in order for them to embark on their journey as a social entrepreneur. Students will understand how to set and create social value through entrepreneurial activities and how they can contribute to society as a social entrepreneur.

At the end of this programme, students will be able to learn all the crucial skillsets of an entrepreneur and to work on actual social entrepreneurship projects.

Students will learn the concepts of ideation and prototyping through the acclaimed techniques of Design Thinking. Design Thinking is generally considered the ability to combine empathy for the context of a problem, creativity in the generation of insights and solutions, and rationality to analyze and fit solutions to the context.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this programme, students will learn key ideation and prototyping strategies as they embark on a project in real time.

At the end of this programme, students will produce an actual e-commerce website with actual products marketed to niche customers.

Millionaire_YounSavers

Students will be exposed to the essential traits and knowledge to ‘financial freedom’ from whichever level or situation that they are in. Values and knowledge of saving, wise spending and integrity will be heavily infused in this programme.

At the end of this programme, students will be able to consciously change their behaviours and attitude towards financial management through the skillsets and tools that they will learn.

UNDERSTANDING INSURANCE

At the end of this programme, students will be empowered to make wise financial decisions by having a fundamental understanding of the common financial instruments that are available in the market.

MATH @ WORK 

Students will be shown that the application of Maths goes beyond the classroom and into the marketplace. Through the use of real life business examples, concepts such as Profit/Loss and Breakeven will be introduced to students in a dynamic and interactive way.

At the end of this programme, students will possess a heightened sense and realisation of the application of Maths in everyday life.

VISUAL MERCHANDISING SKILLS IN RETAILING 

Students will learn in-depth techniques employed by retailers in commonly visited places, from supermarkets to shopping mall boutiques and furniture shops.

Students will learn that it is possible for organisations to remain profitable and ethical, where corporate social responsibility is practised in the marketplace.

 

Millionaire_OthersALLOWANCE MANAGEMENT 

Students will learn the importance of saving their allowance from an early age and how to cultivate this habit till they reach adulthood. Financial planning, good and bad money habits will be covered.

 

THE MARKETPLACE

Students will learn about the theory of demand and supply as well as a real worldview of the market structures in Singapore.

 

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT 

Students will learn about the aspects of managing businesses effectively with good customer management skills as well as project, time and change management skills.

 

STOCK MARKET INVESTMENT 

Students will be introduced to how the stock markets work. Through the use of online stock trading games or paper trading simulations, students will get to put their analytical and judgement skills to the test.

 

ACCOUNTING THE FUN WAY

Students will understand the process of learning accounting in a fun way with the use of a board game in order to reinforce the accounting knowledge concepts taught.

 

YOUNG INNOVATORS 

Students will improve their creative and problem solving skills, where they will be taken through the process of idea generation to idea selection and implementation.

 

PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS ETIQUETTE

Students will acquire knowledge in professional business etiquette. Training in the aspects of formal business dress codes and mannerism as well as a practical dining session will be conducted in this programme.
