ACTING ALIVE Workshop at Chung Cheng High

Our signature ACTING ALIVE workshop was conducted at Chung Cheng High from October to November 2011.

Our drama programme director, Danny Jow and programme manager (asst), Janice led and supervised the team of passionate and dedicated drama trainers to work with 12 classes of secondary 1 students.

The trainers trained and prepared the students for their school’s annual drama festival held over 3 nights from 1-3 Nov.

The students were trained in voice/speech, acting, dramatisation, staging and basic production skills while the process also fostered life skills and character development in them.

Students took on various performing roles as leads and supporting while the rest performed as part of the ensemble cast in their performance. They also assumed various production roles to put the skit together.

Each class produced and presented a 15-minute skit with the aims to use theatre to entertain and educate its invited audience – Principal, Vice-Principal, guests, teachers, peers, families and friends.

They performed a series of performance texts of contrasting genres, issues/themes and acting styles. They dramatised their given story incorporating interesting performance forms and staged it creatively and dramatically with lighting, music, multimedia, self-constructed backdrops, symbolic costumes and props.

The workshop process has made creative learning fun and memorable for the students. It has surely provided a good outlet for them to develop, learn and shine through theatre.

Indeed, Chung Cheng High students were inspired and impacted throughout the journey.

Musical at Jiemin Primary

Our 3rd year collaboration with Jiemin Primary school has encouraged us once again to produce, direct and stage another musical with its drama club students.

The successful musical, “BELIEVE” was directed by our Programme Director, Danny Jow.

It was staged on 10th and 11th November 2011 in the school and was performed to about 1200 audience member.

This year, the approach focused on strong characters development and a moving plot to entertain and educate the audience through theatre.

The story highlighted the importance in ‘believing in yourself and all that you are and learning to overcome challenges’.

The school stage was magically transformed with stylised set and dramatic lighting put together by Mastereign Production team.

Judging from the audience’ feedback, they enjoyed the production thoroughly and commented it was a powerful piece of theatre. Very moving, stylish, believable, entertaining and surely, educational were just some of the compliments given to the cast and team.

And most of all, the 1-hour musical was performed by a talented cast of young actors from Primary 3 to 5.

After each performance, everyone walked away remembering a line spoken in the musical, ‘when you change, everything changes’.

Indeed, the musical has impacted and inspired the musical cast and all those who have seen it.

ACTING ALIVE! @ MacPherson Sec

Our signature ACTING ALIVE is an exciting, fun and a purposeful NAC-endorsed drama workshop offered to both Primary and Secondary Schools.

We had successfully conducted and customised one for Macpherson Secondary School on 27^th June to 19^thSeptember 2011with the aims to provide a creative learning experience for its secondary 2 students to explore the world of literature and to bring the story alive from page to stage while learning about theatre.

5 performance texts based on, Six Tales from Shakespeare, were used with each class performing a tale. All classes had the opportunity to present their dramatic work live to each other also as part of their assessment.

Floodlights were set up in the library to create a theatre setting for the students to experience the demands and joy in staging and performing in a skit.

Students learnt the importance of working as a team and they have shown a growing interest in learning drama throughout the workshop process. The students were enthusiastic and they willingly participated in all the dramatic exercises with a positive attitude and openness. Their confidence and expressiveness had also gradually increased by the end of the workshop. Some of the students had undoubtedly developed a greater self-worth and they realized how drama has contributed to their positive character development.

The drama trainers have thoroughly enjoyed working with the students and they are proud of their progress and achievements. Indeed, they have instructed, impacted, imparted and inspired the students through Acting Alive.

We would like to thank the school for its faith in Mastereign and given us the opportunity to collaborate and to contribute to the school’s holistic education for its students to develop through the power of drama.
